Tag questions are short questions added to the end of a sentence. They're used to confirm information, check understanding, or encourage a response.

🔹 Structure of Tag Questions

> Positive sentence ➝ Negative tag

Negative sentence ➝ Positive tag

✅ 1. Positive Sentence ➝ Negative Tag

You are tired, aren’t you?

She can drive, can’t she?

They will come, won’t they?

✅ 2. Negative Sentence ➝ Positive Tag

He isn’t here, is he?

You don’t like coffee, do you?

She hasn’t finished, has she?

🔹 Common Rules

Verb Type Example Sentence Tag Question

To be (present) He is your brother, isn’t he? 

To be (past) They were late, weren’t they? 

Do/Does She likes tea, doesn’t she? 

Don’t/Doesn’t You don’t smoke, do you? 

Did You watched the movie, didn’t you? 

Modal verbs She can swim, can’t she? 

Imperative Let’s go, shall we? 

✅ Special Cases

➤ With “I am”

I am on time, aren’t I? ✅ (not “amn't I”)

➤ With “Let’s”

Let’s start, shall we?

➤ With Everyone / Nobody / Someone / Nothing

Treated as singular

Everybody was there, weren’t they?

Nobody called, did they?

Nothing happened, did it?

🔹 Intonation Tips

Rising intonation (↗) if you're not sure

➤ You’re coming, aren’t you? ↗

Falling intonation (↘) if you expect agreement

➤ It’s beautiful, isn’t it? ↘
