Here is a list of common infinitive verbs in English:

  • agree: They agreed to help us with the project.
  • appear: She appears to be very happy.
  • arrange: I'll arrange to meet you at the airport.
  • ask: He asked to borrow my book.
  • attempt: She attempted to climb the mountain.
  • can't wait: I can't wait to see you again.
  • can't afford : She can't afford to buy a new house.
  • choose: I chose to study abroad.
  • decide: We decided to go on vacation.
  • demand: He demanded to speak to the manager.
  • deserve: You deserve to be recognized for your hard work.
  • expect: I expect to receive a raise soon.
  • fail: He failed to complete the assignment on time.
  • forget: I forgot to lock the door.
  • hesitate: She hesitated to ask for help.
  • hope: I hope to travel the world someday.

Verbs Followed by Infinitives or Gerunds (with a change in meaning)

Some verbs can be followed by either an infinitive or a gerund (the "-ing" form of a verb), but the meaning changes slightly:

  • forget:
    • I forgot to call her. (I didn't call her.)
    • I forgot calling her. (I don't remember calling her.)
  • remember:
    • I remembered to buy milk. (I bought milk.)
    • I remember buying milk. (I have a memory of buying milk.)
  • stop:
    • I stopped to eat lunch. (I stopped doing something else in order to eat lunch.)
    • I stopped eating lunch. (I no longer eat lunch.)
  • try:
    • I tried to open the jar. (I attempted to open the jar.)
    • I tried opening the jar. (I experimented with opening the jar.)
